It addresses a number of outcomes from the Comprehend and Respond (CR), Compose and Create (CC), Assess and Reflect (AR) goals and invites students to explore and inquire about the English language. In the spring of 2011, Arlene Low at Davidson School replaced her traditional paper and pencil final exam with a student portfolio interview instead. Here is her template script, but you really should take the time to talk to her about this creative and authentic way of assessing the ELA program!
This independent reading project was shared by Amy Orth, Outlook High School in the fall of 2011. "I am using this independent reading project to assess the before, during and after outcome. I've been using lots of sticky notes, exit slips, one-on-one feedback etc, to do some formative assessment of before, during and after strategies since we use them almost any time we read something. This is also a good thing as an anchor assignment for DI."
Romeo and Juliet: A Graphic Novel -- Norm Faraday from Eston has used these in the classroom. The books come from the Oxford University Press in Don Mills, Ontario. As well as Romeo and Juliet, they have an editon of Macbeth and are close to releasing one of Hamlet.
